Website Strategy FAQs

What exactly is a "website strategy"?

Website strategy means having either specific plans and/or marketing goals for a website and having specific website features or capabilities in order to achieve those goals. For example, a business with the goal of creating a social interaction between website visitors will design the website so users can easily sign up, log on and work within a framework.

On the other hand, a business interested in moving from a brick and mortar approach to selling products, to an online store and shoping experience for customers will need a strategy to help customers understand and get involved with the new website interface.

Since there are different reasons for why visiters go to any given website, there should be a specific website strategy for any website in order to maximize return on investment and to achieve specific business or marketing goals.

We have a fairly comprehensive website marketing plan—how can we tell how well it is working?

If you have clearly defined goals, it is really a matter of being able to measure the results of your efforts. You could start with making sure you are using Google Analytics. This great resource allows you to set up conversion goals and track visitor activity on your website. You can also use website stats to track spikes in your website traffic which should correspond to marketing activities.

We have a website and it does get some traffic. How do we create a website strategy?

We can help you with this. Basically we take clients through a number of questions about their business, their marketing goals and where the website fits into their marketing plan. Creating a website strategy will involve determining how to either redirect capabilities within the current website, or determining what new capabilities or features should be added to the website so it can be fully utilized.

Our customer service department sees our website as primarily serving existing clients and providing general information about the company. Our marketing team would like to totally redesign the website and focus on new business development. Is it possible to make everyone happy?

Yes. Website redesigning will involve identifying specific groups of people using a website and then creating an intuitive web interface so each group can find "their" area of the website.

It seems every few years we are totally rebuilding our website to take advantage of the latest trend. How can we adapt our website rather than having to rebuild it?

Websites today should be built on a CMS (content management system) platform. Once this is done the website content is inside a database, and a website framework delivers the content into a design template. As your website needs change, CMS tools allow you to adapt your content and the user interface easily, and to add new capabilities into the existing framework, avoiding total redesigns and saving you time and money.
