What Is Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?

SEO Demystified ArticleSearch Engine Optimization is usually used to describe a process of website design and development so a website can more easily be found by search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Bing.

Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, involves both the programming or coding of the website, and the use of content within the website so that keywords used by potential customers in searches will result in your website being pushed to the top of search engine results.

Google works differently than Bing or Yahoo and other search engines, and optimization will involve making a website compatible with different search criteria.

Advantages of Search Engine Friendly websites are:

  • Higher placement in search engine results
  • Enhanced Google Ad results
  • Greater numbers of website visitors
  • More accurate search results

In order to have a fully optimized website, having a Content Management System or CMS that will allow you to easily assign keywords, descriptions and web page titles, and easily add website content to your website is absolutely essential.

What is Organic Search Engine Optimization?

Organic Search Engine Optimization is used to describe creating content-rich websites which make use of naturally occurring keywords within the website content, rather than using special coding or “tricks” to manipulate a specific search engine.

Tips for improving your website’s SEO:

  • Make sure your website is searchable. Keep in mind that if a search engine cannot search your website and cannot find all your website pages, your chances of higher search results will be reduced.
  • Use search engine friendly URLs. Make sure your website page URLs are not something overly complicated, such as:

Instead, use more natural URLs like:

  • Offer “quality” website content. Consider offering tips, insights, how-to articles, white papers and other information of value to your customers.
  • Add new content to your website on a regular basis. A good goal is to add one new article or website page every other week.
  • Link to relevant websites. Google analyzes what websites your website is linked to, and what websites are linked back to your website. Linking to and from websites with relevant content will improve your Google rankings.
  • Analyze your website regularly. Bing, Google and Yahoo all offer free webmaster tools which allow you to both submit your website and analyze what is working well or not with your website.
  • Create a sitemap.xml file for your website. Make sure your website has an updated sitemap.xml file in your public website directory, and make sure the search engines you are submitting to are using all the pages in your sitemap.xml file.
  • Use Google Analytics in your website. Google Analytics is a great, free tool for giving you insight into how to improve your website design in order to reach your website goals.
  • Track your website traffic conversion. Use conversion code within your website so you can track the number of visitors who complete forms, make a phone call and who complete other calls to action in your website.
  • Avoid “quick fixes.” Be wary of companies who advertise guaranteed search engine placement using their “special” software or techniques. Many of these companies use manipulative techniques that will eventually cause your website to be penalized by Google.
