Getting Started in Website Design and Digital Marketing

How did you get started in website design and digital marketing?

In the early 1990s, before there were websites, I used computer bulletin boards to get software patches and tech support with other computer users. In 1995 I taught myself HTML and built my first website.

Over the next few years I worked for two internet design and development companies and I worked on 60 or 70 web projects for a wide range of clients.

How has digital design changed in the last 20 years?

Broadband and Smartphones are the two biggest change agents to the internet, in my opinion.

Broadband has allowed website designers to push the envelope more and more so we can deliver a website experience today that is visually rich.

With broadband came the delivery of video, of course, and with all the tablet devices and smartphones, website designers today have to be able to deliver a responsive website—a site that works equally well on desktops and mobile devices.

How has your background in printing and graphic design helped you with digital marketing and website development?

I learned years ago that if you break any technology or process down into small steps, what may have seemed very complex or overwhelming at first is really not that difficult.

I also learned from experience that new technology means new business opportunities. I love helping businesses with website design and digital marketing—things my clients don’t have the time to become experts at.

My print design background has been a great foundation for my work as a website designer. Clients love the fact that while I have a lot of technical expertise, I have a designer’s eye and I pay attention to the client’s branding when creating their website.

What advice do you have for businesses who need web design and digital marketing help?

The best advice I can give is to work with a professional who has several years of experience and provides client references.

These days, businesses need to screen website design and digital marketing companies much the same way they would screen a potential employee.

You have to ask a lot of questions and make sure the company you want to work with really understands your marketing objectives and goals.
